In the last two months I have toured the Grand Canyon in a helicopter, hit the jackpot in a Harrah's slot machine, been astounded by Cirque Du Soleil's stage production of "Ka", finally seen my boyhood idol Pat Boone's Christmas show, and played six rounds of golf in the last seven days at the beautiful, fabled Pinehurst Country Club, but The Fabulous Embers and their 2006 Christmas Show was the pièce de résistance, and the best entertainment for the money I've ever come across.



I've been a fan of The Embers for almost fifty years, but I've never heard them sound better. My Christmas season is off to a blessed start from having seen and heard their world-class show.



Gerald Davis on bass was simply marvelous as usual, lighting up the stage with his contagious friendly smile. The newer band members Josh Shilling and Stephen Pachuta fit in comfortably, adding wonderful depth to the band's sound. Bobby Tomlinson, the founder, patriarch, and taskmaster of the group nearly stole the show while stealing Christmas as The Grinch.

The Embers at Virginia Beach

Beach music is a musical genre all to itself, having evolved from a Southern mix of rhythm and blues, doo-wop, boogie woogie, and early rock 'n' roll. It is usually characterized by a light, 4/4 "shag" dance beat.

Recording artists of the 50s and 60s such as The Drifters, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, The Embers, The Temptations, Clifford Curry, Band of Oz, The Tams, The OKaysions, The Platters, Billy Scott, General Johnson and The Showmen, Little Wille John, Bill Deal and the Rhondells and others contributed to the early development of the unique "Beach Music" sound, and disc jockeys of the same period such as "Fessa" John Hook who literally wrote "The Book" on Beach Music, Charlie Brown, and Charlie "Bird" Carawan were essential in the early promotion and popularity of "Carolina Beach Music" as it is sometimes called.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has become the undisputed Mecca for Beach Music and hosts The Carolina Beach Music Association's annual Cammy Beach Music awards each November.

The Embers at Ocean View 19-Aug-05

The Ocean View sky was clear, the moon was yellow, and The Fabulous Embers kicked some Beach Music Butt!

I've been a big fan of the Embers for over FOUR DECADES and they've never sounded better. Their sound mix was really good and the band played smarter rather than harder, resulting in a smoothly fitting jam session which they served elegantly. The Norfolk/Ocean View fans knew the words to most of the Embers hits and stayed until the last drum crash. A good time was had by all.

I Love Beach Music

Beach Music fans seem to have more fun. The Embers song "I Love Beach Music" is said to be the largest-selling Beach Music song of all time, and it certainly does characterize the phenomenon that we call Beach Music.

Beach Music is The Temptations, Jackie Wilson, The Embers, The Four Tops, the worldwide syndicated radio show "On the Beach With Charlie Brown" (a co-worker of mine at WKIX in the '60s), Marvin Gaye, Craig Woolard, The Holiday Band and much more. It is the songs we grew up to and enjoyed on those wonderful vacations at the beach, away from our parents.

I took my girl friend (who is a bit younger) to see Band of Oz at the Outer Banks last year. When she saw the dance floor she said to me in amazement "I can't believe all these people are out there dancing (the Shag) -- with each other!" She never saw them do that at rap concerts I guess. She told me it was the most fun she ever had. I could only modestly tell her "That's what I'm here for, Sweet Thing."

This photo was taken at a free outdoor concert at Ocean View last summer which featured music by The Catalinas, another band from the Carolinas which has been playing around in clubs for decades. To catch this colorful couple dancing under the flag was a photo opportunity that would have thrilled any photographer.

Craig Woolard / Jackie Gore Reunion

NOVEMBER 21, 2004 CAMMY AWARDS

This was better than a Beatles reunion.

In this exclusive photo news scoop from the 2004 Carolina Beach Music Awards presentation in the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach South Carolina, former Embers lead singer Jackie Gore stuns CAMMY Awards co-host former Embers lead singer Craig Woolard and the entire world of Beach Music by walking on stage unannounced and joining him in the song "I Love Beach Music" and, believe it or not, the encore, "Faraway Places."

Woolard later joked to the audience, "When I first saw him come up I didn't know if I needed to put on a football helmet or something."

Heavy stuff.
